AI Provider Keys
AI Provider Keys
AI Provider Keys let the 3DIMLI Assistant use your own AI provider account. This is also called Bring Your Own Key or BYOK.
Use this page when your starter allowance is used, when you want a specific provider/model, or when your account needs a model with capabilities such as image understanding.
The AI Provider Keys page appears only when the 3DIMLI Assistant feature is enabled.
What you can manage
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Provider | The AI provider account you want to connect. |
| API key or credentials | The secret credentials from your provider account. |
| Chat model | The model used for normal text conversations. |
| Vision model | The model used when image understanding is needed. |
| Zero-data-retention marker | A note that your provider key has zero-data-retention enabled with that provider, when applicable. |
| Enabled status | Whether the saved key can be used by the Assistant. |
| Priority | Which saved key should be preferred when more than one is available. |
Add a provider key
- Open Dashboard -> Assistant -> Bring Your Own Key or Dashboard -> Settings -> AI Provider Keys.
- Choose a supported provider.
- Paste the required API key or credentials.
- Choose the chat model and, if needed, the vision model.
- Mark zero-data-retention only if that is actually enabled on your provider account.
- Test and save the key.
If the test fails, the key is not saved as a working provider key.
Model selection
Choose a model that belongs to the same provider as the key you saved. For example, an OpenAI key should use OpenAI models, and an Anthropic key should use Anthropic models.
If a saved key uses a model from another provider, the Assistant can reject it instead of silently falling back to a different provider. This protects you from thinking your key is being used when it is not.
Security notes
- Provider credentials are stored encrypted.
- Full keys are not shown again after saving.
- If a provider key is invalid, expired, rate-limited, or out of credits, Assistant requests using that key can fail.
- Rotating a key at the provider may require reconnecting or updating the saved key in 3DIMLI.
- Do not paste provider keys into normal chat messages.
When to remove a key
Remove a provider key if:
- You no longer use that provider.
- The key was leaked or rotated.
- You want the Assistant to use a different provider.
- The provider account has no credits or has been closed.
Troubleshooting
| Issue | What to check |
|---|---|
| Key test fails | Confirm the key is copied correctly and has access to the selected model. |
| Model is rejected | Choose a model from the same provider as the saved key. |
| Image questions fail | Add a provider/model that supports vision. |
| Assistant still says BYOK is required | Confirm at least one saved key is enabled and tests successfully. |
| Provider is not available | Some providers may be listed only when direct BYOK support is available. |
